Using PrivNet

Everything you need to get a device connected, keep it connected, and revoke it when you don't need it anymore.

Getting started

    Create your account

    Go to Create your first device (or Sign in if you already have an account) and register with an email and password. Free accounts include 3 devices.

    Add a device

    On your dashboard, name the device (e.g. "iPhone" or "Work laptop"), pick a server, and click Create. PrivNet generates a fresh WireGuard keypair — nobody else ever sees its private key.

    Get the config onto the device

    Click Download .conf to save a file the WireGuard app can import, or Show QR and scan it with your phone’s camera inside the WireGuard app. No keys to type by hand either way.

    Install the official WireGuard app

    PrivNet issues the config; the WireGuard app makes the actual connection. Install it once per device from wireguard.com or your phone’s app store, then import the file or scan the QR from step 3.

    Connect

    Open WireGuard, toggle the tunnel on. Your traffic now leaves through your own exit node instead of your regular network.

    Manage or revoke devices

    Each device on your dashboard has its own Revoke button. Revoking removes it from the server immediately. Lost a phone? Revoke it right away.

Installing PrivNet as an app

PrivNet is a PWA — add it to your home screen for quick access to your devices. This installs the management app; you still need the official WireGuard app installed separately to actually connect.

    iPhone / iPad (Safari)

    Share icon → "Add to Home Screen". This installs the management app; the WireGuard app still does the actual connecting.

    Android (Chrome)

    ⋮ menu → "Add to Home screen" (or "Install app" if Chrome offers it directly).

    Desktop (Chrome / Edge)

    Look for an install icon in the address bar, or browser menu → "Install PrivNet…".

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a commercial VPN?+

A commercial VPN is a company sitting between you and the internet, however good their policies are. PrivNet is software you deploy yourself — the exit node is a server you control, and the portal’s source is yours to read.

Do I need to run my own server?+

Yes — PrivNet is a portal in front of a WireGuard server, not a hosted VPN service. An operator provisions exit nodes; you just add devices against whichever one your account has access to.

Can I use it on my phone?+

Install PrivNet to your home screen as a PWA to manage devices, then scan the QR code with the official WireGuard app to actually connect — see "Installing PrivNet as an app" above for why that’s two apps, not one.

What happens if I revoke a device?+

Its key is removed from the WireGuard interface immediately and the device loses access on its next handshake attempt. Revoking is permanent — add the device again from scratch if you need it back.

I hit my device limit. Now what?+

Revoke a device you no longer use to free up a slot, or contact your operator about a plan with a higher device limit.

Does PrivNet see my browsing activity?+

The portal only ever sees account and device-management activity (creating/revoking devices). Once WireGuard establishes a tunnel, your traffic goes straight to the exit node you chose — the portal isn’t in that path at all.

My connection isn’t working — where do I start?+

Confirm the WireGuard app shows the tunnel as active (a green indicator, not just imported). If it won’t connect, the device may have been revoked, or the exit node may be down — check with your operator.
